Traveling to Cambodia: eVisa, Business visa, or e-Arrival?

Cambodia is one of the easiest countries to enter in the region. As a result, many travelers become overly relaxed and end up choosing the wrong visa from the start. The most common mistake is confusing eVisa with e-Arrival. Some travelers complete the e-Arrival form and assume they are ready to enter, only to find out at the airport that they don’t have a valid visa. This often leads to delays, extra steps, or even denied entry.

If you are planning a trip to Cambodia, the real question is not “Do I have a visa?”
It is “Am I using the right visa for my purpose?” There are three things you need to clearly understand: the Tourist eVisa, the Business Visa, and the e-Arrival system.

eVisa Cambodia: The simplest option for short trips

If you are traveling for tourism, visiting family, or staying for a short period, the eVisa is the easiest option. It is an electronic visa that you can apply for entirely online before your trip. Once approved, you simply bring the confirmation file, either printed or saved on your phone, and present it upon arrival. You can typically stay for up to 30 days. The visa is valid for about 3 months from the date of issue and allows a single entry. This makes it suitable for trips with a clear and fixed plan.

However, the process is not completely straightforward. Some steps only become available after you upload your passport. If your documents are not prepared correctly, you may have to restart the application. Also, the eVisa is not accepted at all border checkpoints. If you arrive at an unsupported entry point, your visa may not be valid, and you may need to resolve it on the spot.

In simple terms, the eVisa works best when you want a fast, clear, and pre-arranged solution before you travel.

Business Visa: When you need flexibility

If you plan to work, look for a job, or stay longer, the Business Visa is a better fit.

Despite its name, it is not only for business people. It is widely used by anyone who wants more flexibility after entering Cambodia. At first, it allows a 30-day stay with a single entry, similar to the eVisa. The key difference comes afterward. You can extend and convert it into different types of long-term visas depending on your situation. This means your plan is not locked in. If you decide to stay longer, you can handle the extension inside Cambodia without leaving the country.

The trade-off is that the process is less straightforward than the eVisa. In some cases, you may need additional documents or in-person handling instead of a fully online process.

In short, the Business Visa gives you room to adjust your plans after you arrive.

e-Arrival: Often misunderstood, but not a visa

This is where most confusion happens. e-Arrival is not a visa. And it cannot replace a visa. It is simply an electronic arrival declaration system that replaces the old paper forms at the airport.

Before your trip, you need to submit your personal details and travel information within 7 days of arrival. Once completed, you will receive a QR code to present at immigration. It helps speed up the entry process and can be done individually or for groups.

However, it does not grant you entry into Cambodia. You still need a valid visa, whether it is an eVisa, a Business Visa, or a visa on arrival.  If you only have e-Arrival, you will not be allowed to enter.

Which one do you actually need for your trip to Cambodia?

To avoid confusion, it helps to look at your situation first:

Tourist (eVisa T)

Business (eVisa E)

e-Arrival

When to choose

Short trip, clear itinerary

Longer stay, work, or flexible plans

Required before entry

How to prepare

Apply online before travel

Can start on arrival, then extend if needed

Submit online before your flight

Key point

Not valid at all entry points

Extension must be handled properly

Not a visa

If you need a quick way to understand it, eVisa is best for short trips with a clear plan. A Business Visa is better when you need flexibility or are not ready to lock in your plans. e-Arrival is not a visa; it is simply a required declaration before entering Cambodia.

Most issues do not come from the rules themselves, but from misunderstanding them. Many people assume that completing e-Arrival is enough, but it is not a permit to enter the country. Without a valid visa, you will not be allowed in. On the other hand, if you choose an eVisa but plan to work or stay longer, you will face limitations and may need to apply for a new visa after arrival.

There are also small details that can have a real impact, such as an expired passport, an incorrect photo format, or incorrect personal information. These are easy to avoid, but if overlooked, they can cost you time or force you to start over. The simplest approach is to be clear about your purpose before choosing a visa. Once that is defined, selecting the right option becomes much easier.

Getting it right from the start makes everything easier

You do not need to understand every detail of Cambodia’s visa system. You only need to answer one question clearly: What is your purpose of travel?

If your trip is short and your plan is fixed, the eVisa is enough. If your timeline is uncertain or you may stay longer, the Business Visa is the safer option. And regardless of your choice, you still need to complete the e-Arrival declaration before entering.

Choosing the right visa from the beginning helps you avoid delays, extra steps, and unnecessary stress, especially at the worst possible moment. If you are not sure which option fits your situation, it is better to check before you apply.
